Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Important Notice: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your Windows 10 PC will continue to function beyond this date, Microsoft will cease providing critical services like security patches and technical assistance that keep your system secure and reliable.

Why Should Business Owners Care?

  • Increased Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your PC becomes more exposed to cyberattacks, malware, and viruses, putting your valuable business data at significant risk. Upgrading to a newer Windows version is essential to protect your operations.
  • Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. After Windows 10 support ends, some software may malfunction or stop working entirely, disrupting your workflow.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: Businesses handling sensitive data or subject to strict regulations could face compliance violations using outdated software, potentially leading to fines or legal complications.

Your Upgrade Options Explained

Microsoft urges users to upgrade to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting an incompatible upgrade will result in errors.

If your current PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these alternatives:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) to keep receiving security patches temporarily
  • Switch to a Linux operating system as an alternative
  • Continue using Windows 10 past the deadline, which we strongly advise against due to security risks

Before making any changes, always back up your important data to prevent loss during upgrades.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 for up to one year after the end-of-life date. This is a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.

To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, a free option exists by enabling Windows Backup to sync settings and files to OneDrive. Note that OneDrive provides 5 GB of free storage, and additional space may be needed if you have extensive data.

Don't delay—registration for ESU must be completed before October 14 to qualify.
